Welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well... To what do we owe the extreme pleasure of this surprising transformation? Golden Triangle Architects has had the unique honour of restoring and reimagining Lilian View, a property that carries significant literary and cultural heritage. This house, the childhood home of Anthony Burgess, the celebrated author of A Clockwork Orange, has been given a new lease of life, one that pays homage to its storied past while preparing it for a sustainable future.

Lilian View, located in the heart of Crumpsall was in dire need of attention. Years of wear had taken their toll on the structure, leaving it in a state that demanded more than just cosmetic touch-ups. Recognising the importance of preserving this historic home, we embarked on a comprehensive renovation journey; one that honoured its original charm while introducing modern comforts and longevity.

A Holistic Overhaul
The restoration was nothing short of a full structural metamorphosis. Starting with the basics, we addressed the integrity of the building. From there, a new roof was installed to ensure durability against the elements. The floors were entirely replaced, taking into account both aesthetic considerations and structural resilience.

But the improvements didn't stop there. To bring Lilian View in line with modern energy efficiency standards, we installed a new thermal envelope. This included updated insulation and energy-efficient windows, ensuring the home remains warm in winter and cool in summer while reducing its carbon footprint. Internally, the property was entirely refitted, creating a seamless blend of historical charm and contemporary design.

Challenges and Triumphs
The process, while rewarding, was not without its challenges. We could have opted for easier solutions, but that wouldn’t have been true to the spirit of either the home or its famed former resident. Burgess, known for his wit and complexity, inspired us to embrace the intricacies of the project. Whether it was salvaging original elements where possible or integrating nods to his literary legacy, every decision was made with care and respect.

We jokingly refer to the process as applying a little of the "old ultra-violence," a nod to A Clockwork Orange. In reality, it was more of a labour of love, delicate yet determined, focused on breathing life into the home while respecting its past.

A Bright Future
Today, Lilian View stands proudly, ready to face the next chapter in its life. It’s a home cured of its ailments, equipped to endure for another 127 years and beyond. We hope this restoration serves not just as a preservation of Burgess’s legacy but as a testament to the power of thoughtful, intentional design.

For those who pass by or visit, let Lilian View be a reminder that our heritage can be reinvigorated without losing its essence. And for us at Golden Triangle Architects, it’s another project that exemplifies our dedication to blending history with innovation.

Here’s to Lilian View: a restored icon, a reimagined home.
