We’re excited to share some updates from our project in Sale, where we’re transforming an existing period property that was previously partially converted into a veterinary clinic.

Our design approach retains and repurposes the clinic while introducing a new entrance, atrium, and circulation space between the original and new structures.

This atrium space is shielded from view externally by an arrangement of external fins that promote views out but restrict views (and direct sunlight) in, maintaining a level of privacy when using the circulation space.

By relocating the existing staircase into this new atrium, we’ve unlocked the potential of the original property, creating additional living and bedroom spaces in its place. Instead of replacing the clinic section from scratch, as many others had proposed, we’re recladding and repurposing it, largely keeping the existing layout, reducing the carbon footprint of the build, and maximising the value of existing space.

This reuse allows us to focus the budget on refurbishing the original property and adding a first-floor extension, enhancing the functionality of the existing spaces, maximising the return on investment for the client whilst creating a unique and engaging space.

We have differentiated the new extension from the existing with contemporary detailing but tied the elements together closely through detailed attention to materiality, silhouette, and contemporary references to historic features.

We’re heading for pre-application advice shortly, before submitting for planning. We will keep you posted!
